School Milk Project - Setting up a farm visit

About CEVAS
CEVAS is a voluntary scheme which has been designed to help farmers have a better understanding of how to provide safe facilities for children to visit, information that fits with curricular studies, and to give them confidence in dealing with school visits.

Setting up a farm visit

Through the accreditation scheme, farmers complete three one-day courses in:

  1. preparing for farm visits;
  2. food, farming and the countryside in the national curriculum; and
  3. talking to pupils, students and teachers

Once an individual has been accredited, the farm undergoes a health and safety inspection. If successful, they are listed as CEVAS accredited on the Teachernet and Defra Countrywalks websites. Accredited farms are inspected bi-annually.

CEVAS was developed by Farming and Countryside Education, in partnership with Defra, the former Countryside Agency and the Department for Education and Skills.

Are you a farmer or countryside education officer who is interested in hosting educational visits for schools and the public? CEVAS is a training scheme which includes health and safety, links to the school curriculum and how to communicate with young people, leading to a recognized qualification. Over 30 farmers attended courses in Wales last winter, and we will be running more courses in 2008/09.

Meanwhile there is an opportunity to come on a free half-day course, to find out about school visits without any obligation. The downloadable PDF files below give details of courses near Brecon and at Aberystwyth in September. The course is free, but it is important to book your place with us. If you have already done a CEVAS course, please pass these details on to anyone you know who might be interested.
