School Milk Project - Want to get involved?

Here’s how:
Farmers can play a key role in the School Milk Project. In fact, whether you’ve got school age children or not, your support could prove invaluable.

If you have children at primary school or nursery……….

  • Find out if they already receive milk at school
  • If not, approach the issue as a parent, rather than a potential supplier
  • Explain to a member of staff that you would like your children to have milk at school and offer to help them administer the scheme. Many schools have parent volunteers running their milk scheme so this is not an unusual request
  • Contact your nearest School Milk Project Facilitator and ask for an information pack to be sent to the school.

If you’re not a parent with school age children…………..

  • You can still contact your local schools and find out if they run milk schemes
  • If they are interested in starting a scheme, then contact your nearest Facilitator for an information pack and advice as to how to take things further

As well as getting in touch with your local schools, another great way of generating interest is to give a talk at a school assembly. Children are always fascinated to hear how milk is produced and it’s amazing what they take in.

We often get requests from schools for farmers who are experienced in talking/presenting to children and willing to talk about milk production and it’s great for us to be able to volunteer a name. Equally, your local School Milk Project Facilitator would be more than happy for you to join them at one of their class talks or assemblies.

So if you find it easy to communicate with children between the ages of 5 and 11, or have spoken/presented to children before we’d love to hear from you.

Why not go one step further and open up your farm for school visits? or if you are interested in supplying your milk to schools in your local area and would like more information on how to do this,  please email diane.cannon@dairyco.org.uk.
