We are interested in offering milk to our pupils

Contact the LEA for details of what schemes are available in your Authority. Alternatively you can contact the School Milk Project and we can assist you with this.

You can download the Letter to Parents and canvass your parents to see if a milk scheme would be viable in your school.
Decide which scheme, from the ones available in your LEA, you are going to offer.

How do we run the schemes?
(see the LEA trail for more details)

There are five main schemes that could be available.
1. An Individual Scheme
2. Subsidised Scheme
3. Free milk for the Under Fives
4. Administration Scheme
5. Free Milk for KS1 Children (Wales only)

Not all LEAs offer a subsidised milk scheme within their area but an Individual School Scheme can be run in any school. This can give an opportunity to raise money for extra resources. If any of these schemes do not suit your school then you could run a milk scheme through a Breakfast Club or a Healthy Tuck Shop. You can download some examples for these.

You may need to decide on refrigeration. In some areas dairies can offer support for this, and how you might distribute the milk. You might decide to use Milk Monitors. You may also need to discuss how any money is to be collected and how often e.g. weekly or half termly.
You could use a School Parent Organisation to help you if required.

Can schemes be run by our school caterers?

Yes. If you have LEA Caterers then you would have to contact your LEA to see what support is available.

If you have individual caterers at your school then they may be able to help you administer the scheme of your choice. We can assist with the facilitation of this and can offer advice if it is required. Click here to contact us.

It seems very simple – why did we not offer milk before?

Lots of Schools have had Milk Schemes running successfully for a while and it can depend on what the LEA policy is, or has been.

For some Schools the time to be able to run a Scheme simply has not been right until now.

For many Schools, joining the Healthy Initiatives that LEAs are introducing, has helped them to make different choices for their school.
The School Milk Project actively supports these initiatives.

We need some more help

If you need any help in deciding how you are going to run your chosen Milk Scheme or which one to choose, use the icon on the left to contact one of our Facilitators.
They have the experience in dealing with any issues that can arise and are always happy to discuss your ideas for your Milk Scheme. They are there to facilitate with and support the setting up of your chosen Milk Scheme.

Having a Milk Scheme will greatly benefit both the children and your school.

Milk and Education

The Dairy Council offers plenty of free information and resources for Schools and Parents to use. You can contact them by visiting our web links page.

We already have a scheme but the uptake is poor.

There can be different reasons for this.

Contact a Facilitator and they will be able to discuss the situation.
In most cases, they will have a tried and tested solution that will improve the uptake of milk in your school.

We have a very successful milk scheme and would like to share it with other schools.

Please contact us and pass on your information about your Milk Scheme so that we can inform other schools. It may be of great benefit to them if they are trying to setup a Scheme.

It can also greatly encourage schools as they can see how well a scheme works. You can email us with any details.
